Mechanical clocks first showed up in the early 14th century, but failed to have alarm mechanisms until fifteenth century. First alarms were easy having a notch in which lever would fall and release a hammer, that would hit the bell. A lot of them did not actually have shutoff controls.

First clocks with alarm were German wall clocks with bronze bell, possibly made in Nuremberg. It was quite enormous in measures, 19 inches tall with long driving weight, which dictated that it hanged high on the wall. It was driven by extraordinarily complicated mechanism that needed user spinning special handle every twelve hours to get enough kinetic power to run.

Alarm clock became commoner after the early 17th century with household clock, but still not all of the clocks had the alarm. Those household clocks were still big in design.Small bedside alarm clocks were introduced much later on. Their patent goes to Seth Thomas Clock Company and date in 1876. This bedside clock was the first of this type, but shortly became highly regarded and in the latter 1870′s most of the major United States clock corporations were making them. This wave also came to Europe, where German clock manufacturers were first to make little bedside alarm clocks.

Flashing clocks were introduced by Westclox Moonbeam in 1949. The clock would first flash a light, then buzzer a sound. We all know what snooze alarm is today. Although not many know that first snooze alarm was made by General Electric-Telechron in 1956. Those alarm clock made it to the market in 1959 and had a choice to set them to 5 or ten minutes snooze time.

Today we have many roughly creative sorts of alarm clocks. As an example you can buy clock that pulls your toes to wake you up. Some alarm clocks will spray water on you, other may emit particular smells that would wake folks. And not to mention big number of common and strange sounds and music they came with. Maybe the most funniest I saw were more creative in a way to shut the alarm off. There are some that require you to clear up some puzzle or riddle, that may give you a good early lead of brain activities in the morning. I even saw a gigantic one, that is basically part of the bed and would move the whole mattress when the alarm goes off. Imagine that giant bed alarm clock rocking you in the morning…
